Build for the scale you imagine.
I spent some time in the USA a few times over the last 5 years, and whether Columbia City, Chicago or New York City – it strikes me how scale plays a huge role in how things work in the USA.
It seems there is a mentality that supply is equal to if not greater than demand. Small towns have Walmart, cities have beautiful wide walking pavements, small stores have multiple check-outs, the public transport systems were built 100 years ago and are still able to scale.
This is and isn’t about planning. Of course we should plan for future growth; more importantly, it’s the vision of potential growth that define the scale we imagine.
Why do we plan on what may not happen?
